How to complete identity verification before signing
What identity verification is, what you'll be asked for, and what to do if your name doesn't match the payee on the check.
New identity verification requirements starting Nov 6, 2026
Starting November 6, 2026, anyone receiving funds or named as a payee on a check will need to verify their identity before signing.
Where possible, we verify you by your phone number. Plaid checks it against available data sources that already hold your date of birth and Social Security Number, so you may not need to enter them yourself.
If that is not enough to confirm your identity, you may be asked for your date of birth and Social Security Number, or to upload a photo ID and take a selfie using your phone's camera or a webcam.
Businesses that have already completed underwriting and been approved by iink are exempt from this requirement.
Why we are making this change
These additional security measures help protect your information, prevent fraud, and keep payments safe and secure for everyone using iink.
Your security is important to us
We use Plaid, a trusted financial technology provider used by thousands of financial apps and services, to help verify your identity. Plaid uses industry-standard security measures, including encryption, to help protect sensitive personal information.
How to complete identity verification
- Open your signing page. A Verify your identity card appears just above the signature box.
- Select Verify identity and follow the steps in the window that opens. You will be asked to confirm your phone number.
- When verification is complete, the page updates and you can sign.
The sign button stays locked until verification is complete. If you have verified with iink before, log in. We may already have a verification on file for you.
If the page says "Name variation detected"
This appears when the name on your account does not match the payee name on the check, for example when you are signing for a business, a trust or an estate.
Choose the option that describes your relationship to the payee:
- A business, and I am an authorized signer
- A trust, and I am a trustee
- An estate, and I am the executor or administrator
- An individual, and I have power of attorney
- This is me, but a variation of my name
- Other (add a short explanation)
By continuing, you confirm that you are the legal identity or have legal authority to sign for the payee named on the check. Then select Verify identity.
Documents. If you are signing as a trustee, an executor or administrator, or under power of attorney, you will be asked to attach a document showing your authority. Upload it as a PDF under 10 MB. The other options do not require a document.
Next time. If you have already explained your relationship to the same payee name, we reuse it for up to two years. You will see a note that your relationship is on file and can go straight to verification.
Wrong payee name? If the name on the check is wrong or lists more than one person, select Request revision next to Signing for.
If your verification is under review
Some verifications need a closer look. This can take a little while. Check back on your signing page, which updates when the review is complete.
If your verification did not go through
Select Try again on the verification card. The number of attempts is limited. If you have used all of your attempts or keep having trouble, email support@iink.com and we will help you complete verification.
Is my business exempt?
Businesses that have already completed underwriting and been approved by iink are exempt. If you are logged in under your business's approved iink account, you will see a message that your organization is already verified, and you can sign without verifying separately.
